Thaalam-Example Links

Here are some links for videos, which are examples of some of the features of the thaalam system described in previous pages.

2 kalai action

Krithi with 2 kalai action

Example of Atheetha eduppu. In the first few aavarthams the artist starts at 3/4 of aksharam before aavartham. This is also an example of quick double count for one aksharam

Example of 3/4 akshara eduppu with quick double actions elsewhere.

Example of modern Roopakam with three aksharams - only action

Example of misra chaapu - krithi starts at 13.5 minutes

Example of misra chaapu where for the first few aavarthams, in the 1½ aksharams, there is a single beat only.

Example of Khanda chaapu

Though a good musician can keep the rhythm mentally, vocalists generally sing with explicit thaalam actions, which helps the accompanists. Instrumentalists often have another person to keep the 'kriya' for the benefit of the accompanists.
