Carnatic Music - Some Raagams

Some Raagams from the Raagam Module of Rasika-Gaayaka-Sishya Carnatic Music Software package (which works in Windows OS) are put up here as web pages using the audio facilities of HTML5 and Javascript. These will work with Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome browsers and may work with others.

Choose the Raagam from the 'Select Ragam' menu on top left.(The list is in alphabetical order). You get textual description with explanation of how different notes are played/sung. For each raagam some krithis are cited as examples (without audio).

Aaudio-visual for aarohanam-avarohanam illustrated on a keyboard like picture is on the right side of the screen. Click the 'Play' button to hear the notes while the characters 'sa', 'ri' etc. appear on the corresponding keys on the keyboard. Typical phrases of the raagam are listed below the keyboard picture. Click the 'Play' button to hear the phrases. Currently playing phrase will change to blue color. Before playing, if you click on any phrase it will turn blue and on clicking 'Play', audo will start from that phras. The audio is in tones of Veena or Flute which can be chosen. Choice of Aadhara Sruthi (tonic) is available for 5 sruthis (C to G or 1 kattai to 5 kattai).

There is Thambura background. Its volume can be changed using the volume control on the top. For the general volume use the systems volume control.

Minimising the main window or opening other programs may slow down or introduce gaps in the audio.

The symbols used for the notes are different from those in the orignal Windows software for ga and ni. Suddha Gaandharam is ga1, Saadharana Gaandharam is ga2 and Anthara Gaandhaaram is ga3. Suddha Nishaadham is ni1, Kaisiki Nishaadham is ni2 and Kaakali Nishaadham is ni3. These are the symbols widely used on the internet.

The original software (for Windows OS) has description of 111 Raagams in the Raagam module of Rasika. Rasika has 5 modules (Introductory, Melam, Thaalam, Raagam and Physics of Music). The package has other programs (Gaayaka, Sishya, Thambura, Sruthi Box). The software can be downloaded free. Detailed information on the software and download links (case sensitive) are available at:

The Introductory and Melam modules of Rasika are also available as web pages. The first page is: rasika.1apps.com/JSA/intro1.htm. There are 21 pages in all and the pages have been rewritten with more interactive screens for the melam system. But the music is in the form of .mp3 and so working online there may be some delay in slow connections.
